Adaptogens have become something of a buzz-word in nutritional circles but are all adaptogenic formulas the same? What, exactly, is an adaptogen and how can it help you achieve optimal health and recovery from serious health challenges? We'll touch on some of the basics here but more detailed information on adaptogens and their history can be found on the History of Adaptogens page and the Health Conditions page of this website.

Adaptogens were discovered during extensive research by scientists of the former Soviet Union after World War II. They sought to discover the secret of the long-lived and extraordiarily healthy people living in the villages of Siberia, high up in the Caucasus Mountains of Far East Russia. Their longevity was renowned and documented by Plato and Hippocrates in ancient Greece and, more recently, by a team of gerontologists with National Geographic Magazine. The lead Soviet researchers, Dr. Nicolai Lazarev and Professor Israel Brekhman, discovered that these people routinely include several unique native plants in their diet and suspected that this was the key. After 45 years of study, this exhaustive research resulted in the discovery of "adaptogens," a term coined by Dr. Lazarev to describe a new class of botanical compounds that could actually help humans (or any mammal) fight off the effects of stress and strengthen their own innate healing powers. Dr. Lazarev and Professor Brekhman proved that these adaptogens dramatically improve the functioning of the entire organism and that people who ingest properly extracted and formulated adaptogens experience significant improvements in their health.

There are many factors to consider when selecting an adaptogenic supplement and it can be very difficult to wade through the advertising hype that is rampant in the health industry today. When comparing and evaluating products that contain adaptogens it is wise to consider the following Adaptogenic Formula Criteria:

  1. Selection of the proper type of adaptogen for synergy and targeted benefits
  2. Proper harvesting, storing and transportation of the adaptogenic botanicals
  3. Proper extraction of full-spectrum active ingredients from the adaptogenic botanicals
  4. Selection of synergistic antioxidant botanicals
  5. Optimal blending of the extracted adaptogens and antioxidant active ingredients
  6. Controlled shipping and storage environments for the blended active ingredients
  7. Laboratory assay and quality control testing prior to hydration of the dry ingredients
  8. Hydration with highly filtered water while ensuring guaranteed active ingredient potency
  9. Mixing of organic, unpasteurized, unsweetened juice extracts for flavoring
  10. Final laboratory assay and quality control prior to bottling to ensure 300 milligrams per ounce of active ingredients
  11. No pasteurization of any ingredients
  12. No preservatives added

Without following the above criteria, you will end up with an inferior and, usually, ineffective formula. The Soviet scientists discovered over 20 different adaptogenic botanicals with hundreds of different active ingredients. Active ingredients are the compounds within each plant that actually do the work to heal your body or strengthen your immune system and the Soviet researchers discovered that it takes at least 300mg per day of these extracted active ingredients to produce the beneficial results. If the adaptogenic formula you are considering taking contains less than 300mg per dose of these active ingredients, it's not a worthwhile product.

Proper harvesting is also critical because the plants contain different concentrations of active ingredients, in different parts of the plants, at different stages of their growing season. That is the nature of all botanicals so it's important for the manufacturer to source not only the highest quality adaptogenic botanicals but to ensure that they are harvested at peak concentrations and that those ingredients are then extracted so as to retain their full-spectrum health benefits. The extraction of the active ingredients is a critical step and the best, most effective, extraction process was invented by a Russian plant molecular biologist by the name of Dr. Zakir Ramazanov. He patented a technique using water and vacuum to extract the active ingredients in botanicals thus preserving over 80% of the potency and bioavailability. The standard extraction method used by most manufacturers uses alcohol, heat and pressure which destroys the majority of the beneficial compounds.

While the Soviets studied many adaptogenic botanicals, it was determined that two plants in particular were the most potent and beneficial, Rhodiola Rosea and Ashwagandha, and that the Rhodiola growing in the Siberian Taiga (or high-altitude forest) is the most potent of all due to the altitude, climate, soil and amount of solar radiation. In response to these harsh conditions, the plants have evolved and developed adaptogenic compounds to ensure their own survival. It is important to note that these same two plants growing in other areas of the world, such as Tibet and China, do not have the same potency as those from Siberia. It's very much like terroir with wine -- the quality of the product depends on the special characteristics that geography has bestowed upon them.

It is common knowledge that certain herbs (and drugs) can have interactions, both good and bad. The Soviet scientists found that certain combinations of adaptogens complimented each other and were much more effective when used together. They also found that combining potent full-spectrum antioxidants greatly increased the absorbtion and bioavailability and biopotency of the resulting formula. That is why the ideal formula has multiple adaptogens and multiple antioxidants.

As noted above, it is crucial to get enough of the active ingredients into the formula but it is equally important to get the right mix and balance of the other synergistic ingredients if you are to have a truly effective product. Determining the optimal formula requires a careful study of the scientific data, expert knowledge of human health, and experience in nutritional product formulation. One misstep in the entire process can ruin the effectiveness of the formula.

In order to make their products palatable, many companies use pasteurized fruit juices, sugar, or even worse, high fructose corn syrup -- all of which are extremely bad for our bodies. Pasteurization is a heating process used to sterilize a product in order to kill germs and bacteria; unfortunately, it also kills all of the beneficial enzymes resulting in a useless product. It is critical that any botanical/herbal health supplement be unpasteurized. If the product is properly sourced, stored and manufactured in a clean environment, i.e., an FDA approved manufacturing facility, you may not have to pasteurize it to be safe. If the manufacturer is using inferior ingredients such as moldy fruits or improperly harvested and stored plants, then pasteurization is required. Just keep in mind that anything pasteurized is devoid of the beneficial compounds you are looking for.

Products that are properly formulated and manufactured, then bottled in glass containers do not require preservatives. Preservatives are nothing but a low-dose poison and their main use is to extend the shelf life of the product. These poisons are very bad for you, building up in your organs and compromising your immune system, health and longevity. Recent research proves sodium benzoate and related chemicals, prevalent in today's mass produced foods, are extremely bad. If you can avoid putting a preservative in a product, you will have a much better and healthier product.

Now for a word about juices (Noni, Xango, Goji, Fruta-Vida, Monavie, Zrii and over 30 others....) They provide health benefits to a small percentage of people who try them because they are just juices with very small amounts of beneficial compounds in the entire bottle!

That's right. The various juices on the market today are a nutritional farce and contain only a fraction of the active ingredients they tout as so beneficial. As stated above, the Soviet research found that it takes at least 300mg per day to effect any real health benefits. Independent laboratory tests have shown that these juices contain under 15mg of active ingredients in an entire bottle. Compare that to the supplement we recommend at 300mg per ounce -- that's 7,500mg per bottle. Strangely, if you contact any of the companies mentioned above they will be very happy to tell you all the so-called benefits of their products but will absolutely not disclose the amount of active ingredients and will probably tell you that it's proprietary information. The company we recommend stands alone in it's integrity and honesty. While they won't tell you the exact proportion of each of the five botanicals in their product, they do guarantee that each ounce contains 500mg of active ingredients and that's what's really important anyway.

Another important item to consider is the almost total lack of clinical human trials on the active ingredients used in the juices. All the juices offer as proof of health benefits is folk lore and marketing hype woven into impressive advertising campaigns with no scientific evidence to back it up. Compare that to 45 years of scientific research and over 3,000 human clinical studies on the adaptogenic health benefits of the ingredients in our recommended proudct. This was carefully conducted and rigorously controlled scientific testing by premier Soviet scientists during the last half of the 20th century. All the studies are documented and many of the scientific white papers have now been translated into English and are available for review.

Finally, don't be fooled by all the media hype surrounding antioxidants that all nutritional products seem to exploit. They love to quote ORAC (oxygen radical absorption capacity) scores and that is highly deceptive. The ORAC assay test was developed by the FDA and Brunswick Labs; it is a laboratory measurement of the antioxidation capacity of an item. Simply put, it is a measurement of how well an item slows the rusting of iron shavings. It has absolutely nothing to do with the antioxidation capacity of the same item in the human body. In fact, Brunswick Labs has become very concerned that their antioxidation testing and ORAC values are being misused by nutritional companies. This was stated in a letter from Brunswick Labs wherein they state that the ORAC scores are being grossly misused for marketing purposes by various juice companies and that the ORAC value does not indicate how well, or even if, an antioxidant works in the human body. Even worse, many of the ORAC scores quoted by the juice companies are the highest scores they could find on "virgin" berries and plants, rather than the score of their highly diluted and highly processed, pasteurized juice. Please visit our Power2Heal blog to view a copy of the letter from Brunswick labs.

The human body is incredibly complex and requires hundreds of different antioxidants, all of which are absorbed and work differently on the organs, tissues and various other parts of our bodies. Nutritional scientists refer to "functional antioxidants" to describe how well an antioxidant performs in the human body. Our recommended supplement contains Rhodiola Rosea and Ashwangandha, two of the most beneficial adaptogenic botanicals known to mankind, and Caucasian Bilberry and Georgian Pomegranate, two of the most powerful functional antioxidants available today, plus it has the added benefit of Acai which is a top superfood with many health benefits by itself. So don't fall for the smoke and mirrors and hype of the juice companies.
